Everything you need to know

Sculpted monochromeHandmade6 models · 16 sizes

Here, there is no color to catch the eye: it is the light that does all the work. Intense Contrast is a series of monochrome canvases where paint, applied in thick layers, forms sculpted reliefs that every ray of sunlight reveals. Depending on the model, the material ripples like a drape of silk lifted by the wind, or organizes itself into superimposed geometric blocks, striations, and rough flat areas. Two atmospheres share the collection: deep white, luminous and soothing, and intense black, mysterious and spectacular. The work is hand-painted to order and is available in six models and sixteen vertical sizes, ranging from 50 x 70 cm to 150 x 230 cm, with the possibility of a custom size. Because it plays with tone-on-tone, it fits just as well in a minimalist interior as in a more elegant decor, without ever clashing with the existing palette. Hung facing a window or under raking light, its appearance changes from hour to hour, much like a contemporary bas-relief.

Six models

Model A
A – The white drape
Fluid and sculpted folds, white on white.
Model B
B – The black drape
The same composition, in a deep, velvety black.
Model C
C – The black blocks
Crossed bands and striated flat areas, all in black.
Model D
D – The grey striations
Pearl grey, vertical striations and horizontal blocks.
Model E
E – The light strata
Superimposed horizontal layers, greyish white.
Model F
F – The white patchwork
Rectangles and squares in relief, off-white.

All six models are available in the same sixteen sizes. Models A and B form a duo: the same drape composition, one in white, the other in black, ideal for mirroring each other on either side of a room.

The concept

Tone-on-tone: when relief replaces color

A monochrome relief canvas is based on a simple principle: since the color is uniform, it is the volumes that create the design. Each crest of paint catches the light, while each hollow holds a shadow. The painting thus becomes a living surface, comparable to a sculpted bas-relief, whose appearance varies according to the light's direction, the time of day, and the viewer's position.

To achieve these volumes, the paint is applied in thick layers, worked with a tool, and then left to dry to set every fold and edge. On the draped models, the material is stretched into long curves; on the geometric models, it is smoothed into clean flat areas or scratched with fine striations. This diversity of gestures gives each model its own unique personality.

The luxury of silence

In an interior where everything speaks, a monochrome painting brings a form of visual calm. The white versions expand the space and diffuse light: they naturally find their place in a bedroom, a sun-drenched living room, or a dining room with light tones. The more dramatic black versions stand out on a light grey wall or waxed concrete, like a gallery piece.

Our lifestyle photos show these canvases in sleek interiors: grey sofas, bentwood armchairs, wool ottomans, light curtains. This is where they truly shine, adding depth without adding noise.

Showcasing your canvas

1
Choose your atmosphere: white for light and softness, black for depth and character.
2
Select a model: fluid drape (A, B) or geometric composition (C, D, E, F).
3
Have it stretched or framed, as the canvas is delivered without a frame or stretcher bar.
4
Pay attention to lighting: natural or artificial side lighting enhances the reliefs and reveals the composition.

Comparing the six models

Model Hue Composition
A White Fluid curved drape
B Black Fluid curved drape
C Black Crossed bands and striated blocks
D Light grey Vertical striations and blocks
E Greyish white Horizontal strata
F Off-white Rectangle patchwork
Painted on demand: your canvas is hand-painted after your order is placed. Each piece is unique, with slight variations in relief compared to the photos, and shipping requires a little more time than items available in stock.
Decor tip: pair model A and model B in the same room, for example, on either side of a door or above two symmetrical pieces of furniture. The same drape, in white and black, creates a striking graphic dialogue.

Precautions: the reliefs are the richness of this canvas but also its most fragile part. Never store it flat face down against a surface, avoid friction, and handle it by the edges. White versions are susceptible to soiling: keep them away from open kitchens and smoke. The canvas is delivered without a frame or stretcher bar.

An exceptional gift

To mark a milestone, a new apartment, the opening of an office or a boutique, an original relief canvas is a gift that is noticed and lasts. White and black adapt to most interiors, which limits the risk of a misstep.

Frequently Asked Questions

White or black: which version should I choose?
It all depends on the effect you are looking for. The white versions (models A, E, and F) and the grey version (D) bring light and a sense of space: they are suitable for medium-sized rooms, bedrooms, and interiors with light tones, blonde wood, or linen. The black versions (models B and C) create a powerful focal point and a more subdued atmosphere, ideal on a light wall, in a large living room, or a study with an assertive style. If you are unsure, look at the dominant color of your walls: the contrast with the canvas will reinforce its impact.
Are models A and B the same artwork?
They share the same draped composition: long sculpted folds that descend diagonally, like fabric lifted by the wind. The difference lies in the hue: model A is entirely white, with soft shadows that define the relief, while model B is black, which makes the drape more mysterious and accentuates the highlights on the crests. Since each canvas is hand-painted to order, the exact tracing of the folds varies slightly from one piece to another. Both can also be hung together.
Why does the appearance change depending on the light?
On a monochrome canvas, it is the reliefs that define the composition. When light comes from the side, each edge is illuminated and each hollow fills with shadow: the motif appears with force. Under diffuse, frontal light, the volumes soften and the canvas becomes calmer. Thus, throughout the day, as the sun moves, Intense Contrast never presents exactly the same face. An adjustable spotlight or a wall sconce allows you to recreate the raking light that enhances it at night.
What sizes can be ordered?
Sixteen vertical sizes are offered: 50 x 70, 60 x 80, 60 x 90, 70 x 100, 80 x 120, 80 x 140, 90 x 130, 90 x 150, 100 x 160, 100 x 180, 110 x 170, 120 x 180, 130 x 180, 130 x 200, 140 x 220, and 150 x 230 cm. For truly spectacular relief, large sizes are highly recommended because the material has space to unfold. If your wall requires a specific dimension, a custom size can be studied upon request before your order.
How is the canvas delivered?
The canvas is delivered without a frame and without a stretcher bar, as indicated in its specifications. Before hanging it, you will therefore need to have it stretched over a wooden frame or entrust it to a framer. For a relief artwork like this one, an presentation without glass is advised to keep the material visible and not crush the volumes. A floating frame, which surrounds the canvas while leaving a slight gap, particularly highlights monochrome canvases, as seen in several of our photos.
Can the canvas be made to measure?
Yes. Because each Intense Contrast canvas is hand-painted to order, it is possible to envision a specific dimension to adapt it to a precise wall: a headboard, a section between two windows, a stairwell, or an entryway. Please indicate the desired model and the exact dimensions before placing your order so that we can verify feasibility. Keep in mind that the relief and composition will be adapted to the new format while remaining faithful to the spirit of the chosen model.
How do I maintain a monochrome relief canvas?
Dust is the main enemy of reliefs, especially on white versions. Dust the canvas regularly with a soft feather duster or a large, dry brush, following the direction of the volumes without pressing. Never use water, household cleaning products, or a damp cloth, which could mark the paint. Avoid hanging the canvas above a radiator, fireplace, or in a very humid room. Finally, protect it from prolonged direct sunlight, which can alter the hues over time, especially white.
