Porcelain vs. ceramic: why is it different?
Porcelain is fired at a much higher temperature than ordinary ceramic — between 1200 and 1400°C for porcelain, compared to only 900 to 1100°C for classic ceramic. This firing difference radically changes the properties of the final material: porcelain becomes harder, denser, less porous, and acquires a subtle translucency characteristic of fine porcelains. Its enameled surface is smoother, shinier, and more resistant to stains and odors.
For a cigar ashtray, these properties are essential: the non-porous surface does not retain stale tobacco odors unlike ordinary ceramic, and cleaning is done in a few seconds with water. Non-slip microfiber back: the underside of the ashtray is covered with a soft microfiber layer that provides two essential benefits. ⚠ Maintenance — important precaution: clean only the porcelain bowl (inside of the ashtray) with lukewarm water and a little mild dish soap, then dry immediately with a microfiber cloth to avoid limescale marks. Never wet the back of the ashtray which is coated with a non-slip microfiber layer: moisture could detach the coating and make the ashtray lose its stability on the table. To clean the bowl, turn the ashtray over after washing and dry the edges thoroughly before putting it back.
For the gilded edges and notches, avoid abrasive sponges and acidic products (vinegar, bleach) which can damage the gilding. A soft microfiber cloth is sufficient to maintain the shine of the finish.
