Why is Spanish cedar the reference wood for humidors?

Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) has been the historical wood for all premium humidors since the 19th century. Its hygroscopic properties allow it to slowly absorb and release moisture, which buffers sudden changes in ambient humidity and maintains a stable microclimate around your cigars — an essential condition for preserving their aromatic oils over time.

Beyond regulation, its natural terpenes diffuse into the confined air of the humidor and gradually enrich the tobacco's aromas with a subtle woody and spicy note. Cedar also possesses a valuable defensive quality: it repels the tobacco beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), a small devastating beetle capable of destroying an entire collection. A humidor made entirely of cedar offers incomparably superior preservation to an MDF humidor with simple interior veneer.

The JANGO spirit

The JANGO embraces a simple but radical logic: the glass top transforms the classic humidor into a display case. While most humidors require opening the lid to check inventory — a gesture that breaks the internal microclimate and stresses the cedar —, the JANGO allows the gaze to penetrate without intervention. It is an object for the collector who loves to contemplate their collection as much as smoke it, who arranges the vitolas in a fan as one arranges watches in a display case. The glass face has a second virtue: it visually signals to the casual guest the owner's relationship with cigars, without ostentation but without concealment. A humidor that is seen, in a Black, Brown, or Tan finish that suits an executive desk, a cozy lounge, or a library.

Preparing the JANGO before first use (seasoning)

1
Humidify the interior — gently wipe the cedar walls with a slightly damp cloth (distilled water only). Do not soak, just wipe to awaken the wood fibers without saturating them.
2
Load the crystals — pour distilled water into the crystal humidifier until they are swollen and translucent. Place the humidifier inside the humidor.
3
Wait 24 to 48 hours — check the hygrometer on the front without opening the humidor. Target: 65 to 70% stable. If insufficient, re-humidify the walls and wait again.
4
Place your cigars — once the humidity is stable, your JANGO is ready. Close and admire your collection through the glass without having to open.

Needle hygrometer — precision and complement. The included analog hygrometer offers an accuracy of ±5%, perfectly suited for routine monitoring of a tasting collection. For precious cigars or finer reference control (±1 to 2%), consider a digital precision hygrometer placed inside as a complement.

Distilled water only. Never refill the crystal humidifier with tap water: limescale clogs the crystals and drastically reduces their effectiveness. Distilled water can be found in pharmacies or supermarkets (ironing section) for a few cents.

Which JANGO version to choose?

Version Composition For whom?
Solo JANGO humidor + crystal humidifier + front hygrometer Enthusiasts already equipped with a lighter and cigar cutter
Houdini + Houdini butane torch lighter (yellow finish) & steel cigar cutter To start with a complete cigar ritual, modern butane lighting
Gambit Silex + Gambit flint lighter & steel cigar cutter Vintage lighter spirit, flint ignition, charm of the classic gesture
Carbon Nyfe + matching Nyfe carbon fiber lighter & cigar cutter Absolute material consistency, contemporary technical aesthetic

Important note: lighters and cigar cutters are included only in the sets (Houdini, Gambit Silex, Carbon Nyfe). The Solo version includes only the JANGO humidor with its crystal humidifier and front-mounted needle hygrometer — an ideal choice if you are already equipped with accessories or want to compose your ritual at your own pace.

Understanding the 3 set lighters

Lighter Ignition mode Spirit
Houdini Butane torch flame — refillable Modern ignition, wind-resistant flame, for terrace and outdoor use
Gambit Silex Flint — traditional wheel Vintage ignition, ritual gesture, antique lighter spirit
Carbon Nyfe Butane torch — carbon fiber body Modern ignition, technical aesthetic, maximum lightness

JANGO or solid lid humidor? The JANGO features a glass top: it's a display humidor, ideal if you want to see your collection daily. If maximum light protection is your priority (precious cigars, long aging), then opt for a solid lid humidor that provides more protection against UV radiation. Both approaches are valid — the JANGO prioritizes daily visual enjoyment.

With its glass top and full Spanish cedar construction, the JANGO creates an immediate wow effect when opened — especially in its boxed versions, which combine humidor + lighter + cigar cutter ready to use. For an already equipped enthusiast: the Solo is sufficient. For a beginner or a memorable gift: Houdini (modern ritual) or Gambit Silex (vintage ritual). For the discerning enthusiast who appreciates material consistency: Carbon Nyfe.

Ideal occasions: major birthday (40th, 50th, 60th), Father's Day, Christmas, retirement party, corporate gift, or professional promotion gift.

Frequently asked questions

How many cigars does the JANGO humidor actually hold?
Up to 20 cigars in Robusto (ring gauge 50) or Corona (ring gauge 44) format. More generous formats like Gordo (ring gauge 60) or Churchill take up more space — expect to fit around 12 to 15 cigars in these formats. The interior dimensions of 21.6 × 19.1 × 4.3 cm allow for free combination of several formats.
What is the difference between the Solo version and the gift sets?
The Solo includes only the JANGO humidor with its crystal humidifier and front-mounted hygrometer. The Houdini, Gambit Silex, and Carbon Nyfe sets add a lighter and cigar cutter matching the spirit of the set. If you are already equipped, the Solo is ideal; otherwise, a set offers an immediate complete cigar ritual right out of the box.
Which set to choose between Houdini, Gambit Silex, and Carbon Nyfe?
The choice depends on your lighting style. Houdini: torch flame butane lighter for modern, wind-resistant lighting, ideal for patios and outdoors. Gambit Silex: traditional flint wheel lighting, for the charm of the vintage gesture and ritualistic character. Carbon Nyfe: butane torch with carbon fiber body, for material consistency and contemporary technical aesthetics. None is better than the others — it's a matter of style and personal preference.
Do I need to prepare the humidor before putting cigars in it?
Yes — seasoning is essential. New cedar is delivered dry and would immediately absorb moisture from your cigars, which would dry them out. Gradually humidify the walls over 24 to 48 hours before the first loading, following the four steps detailed above. Allow about two days between unpacking and placing your cigars.
How often should I refill the humidifier?
The crystal humidifier has an autonomy of 4 to 8 weeks depending on ambient conditions (dry or humid climate, temperature, frequent openings). Check the front hygrometer every two weeks and refill as soon as the level drops below 65%. Refill only with distilled water, never tap water (limescale clogs the crystals).
Is the needle hygrometer accurate enough?
The supplied analog hygrometer offers a precision of ±5% — perfectly sufficient for routine monitoring of a tasting collection. For precious cigars or finer monitoring, you can supplement it with a digital hygrometer (±1 to 2%) placed inside the humidor as a reference reading.
Won't the glass top damage the cigars?
No — the glass is perfectly sealed and does not affect the internal microclimate. The only point of attention concerns exposure to direct sunlight for long periods: UV rays can eventually dry out the wrappers. Place the JANGO away from direct sun, in a normal living room. Storage remains excellent even for long aging under these conditions.
