Everything you need to know

The Calinga humidifier is an acrylic polymer crystal humidification system designed for cigar humidors. Transparent crystals Its principle is simple: the transparent crystals absorb distilled water, swell, and release humidity gradually and steadily into the enclosed space of your humidor. The transparent rectangular case, featuring three ventilation vents, is simply placed inside your humidor — on a tray, a divider, or at the bottom, depending on the available space. No wiring, no electronic mechanisms: the Calinga operates via passive evaporation. A discreet, effective, and economical accessory that maintains your cigars in optimal storage conditions.

Polymer crystals: natural humidification

Acrylic polymer crystals (or super-absorbent crystals) are capable of absorbing up to several hundred times their weight in water. Once immersed in distilled water, they swell to form a transparent gel. Placed in an enclosed environment like a cigar humidor, they release humidity slowly through evaporation via the perforations in the case.

Unlike traditional sponges or foams that release their humidity irregularly, polymer crystals offer progressive and stable diffusion. They are also less prone to mold because they do not provide an organic medium favorable to bacterial growth — provided that you use distilled water exclusively, without any additives.

Why choose the Calinga

✦
Transparent crystalsNatural and progressive humidification. The crystals swell with distilled water and release humidity gently, without sudden changes.
◆
Distilled water onlyNo chemical solutions, no propylene glycol. Distilled water from the supermarket is sufficient — the simplest solution.
➤
Compact rectangular formatCan be placed on a tray, a divider, or at the bottom of the humidor. Fits most desktop and travel humidors.
✦
Hygrometric stabilizationThe crystals regulate naturally: they release humidity when the air is dry and absorb it when it is too humid.
◆
3 ventilation ventsThree circular diffusion zones optimize the distribution of humidity throughout the volume of the humidor.
➤
Indefinitely rechargeableThe crystals do not wear out — simply add distilled water when they shrink. A sustainable investment.

Simplicity serving preservation

The Calinga does not pretend to be a decorative object — it is a discreet precision tool. Its transparent plastic case blends into any humidor interior without distracting from the wood or the cigars. The three concentric vents pierced on the top face ensure balanced moisture diffusion along the entire length of the case.

Its elongated rectangular shape is designed to fit the interior dimensions of standard humidors. Placed at the bottom or on a removable tray, it occupies minimal space while offering a maximum diffusion surface. No wires, no batteries, no noise: the Calinga works silently, 24 hours a day, through the sole power of natural evaporation. It is the humidifier you install and forget — until the next refill with distilled water.

4-step setup

1
Immerse the crystals — submerge the Calinga in a container of distilled water for 30 to 60 minutes. The crystals will swell and become translucent.
2
Drain the excess — remove the Calinga and let the excess water drip out for a few minutes. Wipe the outside of the case with a dry cloth.
3
Place in your humidor — set the Calinga flat in your humidor, vents facing up. Place it on a removable tray, a divider, or at the bottom — depending on available space.
4
Monitor and recharge — check your hygrometer. When the crystals visibly shrink and humidity drops below 65%, submerge the Calinga in distilled water again. In normal conditions, recharge every 2 to 4 weeks.

Crystals vs. sponge vs. Boveda

Criteria Crystals (Calinga) Sponge / foam Boveda packet
Diffusion Progressive and stable Irregular (spike then drop) Constant bidirectional
Mold risk Low (inert crystals) High (organic medium) Very low
Recharge Distilled water — infinite Distilled water — infinite Disposable (2-3 months)
Long-term cost Very low (distilled water) Very low High (regular replacement)
Precision Good (±3-5%) Average (±5-10%) Excellent (±1%)
Maintenance Soaking every 2-4 weeks Frequent soaking None (replacement)

Universal compatibility — The Calinga is suitable for all cigar humidors with enough interior space to hold the case flat. It works in desktop humidors (20-100 cigars), spacious travel humidors, and cigar cabinets. For very small humidors (5-10 cigars), ensure the case dimensions do not compress your cigars. A single Calinga is sufficient for humidors up to approximately 50 cigars — beyond that, double up with a second module or a supplementary model.

Distilled water only — never tap water — Tap water contains lime and minerals that clog the crystal pores and encourage bacterial development. Use exclusively distilled water, available in supermarkets for less than 2€. Add no additives: no propylene glycol solution, no fragrance, no vinegar. Polymer crystals work with pure water; that is their strength and simplicity.

Technical sheet

Product Humidifier for cigar humidor
Technology Transparent acrylic polymer crystals
Format Elongated rectangular, transparent case
Ventilation 3 perforated concentric vents
Installation Place flat in the humidor (vents facing up)
Recharge Distilled water only — 30-60 min soaking

Never use propylene glycol solution — Calinga acrylic crystals work exclusively with distilled water. PG (propylene glycol) solutions are designed for foam humidifiers, not for polymer crystals — they clog the pores and reduce absorption capacity. Also, do not use tap water, mineral water, or spring water: lime degrades the crystals and promotes mold.

The essential accessory for every humidor owner

The Calinga is the natural complement to any cigar humidor. Give it as an accompaniment to a humidor for a complete gift — the recipient will only need to add distilled water for immediate cigar preservation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when to recharge the Calinga?
Two indicators: visually, the crystals shrink and become smaller and drier when they have exhausted their water reserve. On your hygrometer, a drop below 65% signals that it is time to recharge. In normal conditions (closed humidor, ambient temperature), count on a recharge every 2 to 4 weeks. In summer or in a warm environment, the frequency may increase.
Why use distilled water and not tap water?
Tap water contains lime, chlorine, and minerals that accumulate in the crystals and gradually clog their pores. Eventually, the crystals lose their absorption capacity. Distilled water is chemically pure — it leaves no residue and does not promote mold growth. A 5-liter bottle costs less than 2€ in supermarkets and lasts for several months of refills.
Can propylene glycol be used with the Calinga?
No, never. Propylene glycol (PG) solutions are designed for foam or sponge humidifiers, not for polymer crystals. PG clogs the pores of the acrylic crystals and drastically reduces their absorption capacity. The Calinga works exclusively with pure distilled water — it is precisely this simplicity that makes it reliable.
Is the Calinga suitable for all humidor sizes?
The Calinga is suitable for desktop humidors (20 to 100 cigars), spacious travel humidors, and cigar cabinets. A single module is sufficient for humidors up to about 50 cigars. Beyond that, double up with a second Calinga or a complementary model. For very small humidors (5-10 cigars), ensure the case does not compress your cigars inside.
How long does a Calinga last?
Acrylic polymer crystals do not wear out or degrade over time. They can be recharged indefinitely — simply submerge them in distilled water when they shrink. The case itself is made of durable plastic. Properly maintained (distilled water only, no PG, no tap water), a Calinga lasts for several years without replacement.
Where should I place the Calinga in the humidor?
Place the Calinga flat, vents facing up, in a location where it does not compress the cigars. Ideal locations: on a removable tray, on a cedar divider, or at the bottom of the humidor under the cigars. Avoid placing it directly against the cigars — leave a small space so that the humidified air can circulate freely. In drawer-style humidors, place it in the most accessible compartment to facilitate refills.
What is the difference between the Calinga and the Calinga Round?
Both use the same acrylic polymer crystals and operate with distilled water. The only difference is the shape of the case: rectangular for the Calinga, rounded for the Calinga Round. Choose based on the available space in your humidor and the shape that fits best.
