The art of the luminous mobile

SCREEN Rattan draws from the vocabulary of Alexander Calder's mobiles as much as it does the tradition of the Asian folding screen. On its matte black steel structure, hand-woven caning screens seem to float weightlessly, held in balance by the precision of the metal branches. Each screen is edged with hand-sewn black fabric that contrasts with the warmth of the rattan and echoes the structure. At the heart of this botanical mobile, the bulb diffuses its light through the caning mesh, casting openwork shadows on the walls and ceiling that change with the slightest breath of air.

Wall lamp or pendant lamp: which to choose for your space?

The wall lamps (33 and 60 cm) are suitable for spaces where ceiling height is limited, for hallways, headboards, or focal walls. The XXL pendant lamps (60 to 120 cm) require a minimum ceiling height of 2.50 m and find their full expression in living rooms, dining rooms, hotel lobbies, or high-ceiling restaurants. The 120 cm model, with its 11 screens, becomes a true architectural installation in a stairwell or atrium.

Bulb advice. Use an E27 warm white (2700K) LED bulb, globe or transparent Edison shape, with an intensity of 600 to 800 lumens. The caning mesh acts as a natural diffuser: no need for excessive brightness. Do not use bulbs exceeding 60W — excessive heat could eventually dry out the rattan and alter the edging fabric.

SCREEN Rattan or Saturne Lumineux? Both fixtures use rattan but embody two radically distinct aesthetics. The Saturne Lumineux is a single radial flattened disk with a Mediterranean, bohemian spirit. The SCREEN Rattan is a multi-screen mobile sculpture with contemporary Asian and Zen inspiration. Choose SCREEN for a dynamic architectural presence, and Saturne for a minimal graphic silhouette.

Rattan caning precautions. Rattan and the edging fabric are natural materials sensitive to humidity, excessive heat, and solvents. Avoid installation in an open kitchen directly above stovetops, in bathrooms, or in the immediate vicinity of a heat source. You must respect the 60W limit on the E27 socket — we recommend a 6 to 9W LED, which produces plenty of light without risk.

An exceptional architectural gift. For a major housewarming, the inauguration of a new property, or a grand wedding, the 100 or 120 cm pendant models become memorable gifts — true installations that transform an interior permanently. The 33 or 60 cm wall lamps are more accessible yet refined gifts for enthusiasts of contemporary Asian design. The artisanal manufacture of the caning gives it heirloom value.

Frequently asked questions

Which model should I choose for my room?
For a bedroom, hallway, or entryway, the 33 cm wall lamp fits discreetly (3-5 m²). For a focal wall in a living room or dining room, the 60 cm wall lamp creates a strong presence (10-15 m²). For pendant lighting, the 60 cm model is suitable for a reading corner or small dining area; the 80 cm for a table seating 4-6; the 100 cm for a large living room or hall; the 120 cm becomes an architectural piece in a double-height space or atrium. Allow for a minimum ceiling height of 2.50 m for pendant models.
Do the wall lamp and pendant lamp share the same aesthetic?
Yes, the hand-woven rattan caning screens and the matte black steel structure are identical throughout the range. The difference is mechanical: the wall lamp mounts to the wall with a structure collapsed toward the surface, while the pendant lamp deploys on the ceiling like a 360° mobile. The visual effect and quality of diffused light are exactly the same.
How many caning screens are on each model?
The number of screens increases with diameter to maintain the visual density of the mobile effect. The 80 cm models feature approximately 10 screens, and the 120 cm models up to 11. Wall lamps and smaller models have fewer, structured to optimize the visual effect on a more compact silhouette. This distribution is precisely calibrated to maintain the sculptural character at all scales.
Which bulb should I choose to reveal the caning?
An E27 LED bulb in warm white (2700 Kelvin), transparent globe or decorative Edison shape, 600 to 800 lumens. The globe or Edison shape is essential: its centered light point projects the openwork patterns of the caning onto surrounding surfaces in delicate shadow plays. A 6 to 9W LED is more than enough and generates no heat that would be problematic for the rattan.
Why is the 60W limit so strict?
Rattan is a natural plant fiber, and the edging fabric is an organic material. Any source of excessive heat (a classic 100W+ incandescent bulb or halogen) can eventually dry out the rattan, making it brittle, and alter the black fabric. With a modern LED, you get 800 to 1000 lumens for 8 to 10W of consumption — meaning no heat issues. The 60W limit is a historical safety margin set by the manufacturer.
How do I install the pendant lamp on the ceiling?
The ceiling canopy is DCL adaptable (Dispositif de Connexion Luminaire) — the French electrical standard that simplifies installation. If your ceiling junction box meets DCL standards, installation is quick. Otherwise, hire an electrician to adapt the connection. The black textile cable can be shortened to the desired length. For pendant models, allow for a minimum clearance of 2.10 m between the floor and the bottom of the lowest screen.
How do I maintain the rattan caning?
Regular dusting with a natural feather duster or a soft, dry cloth is sufficient. Never use water, cleaning sprays, solvents, or chemicals, as they will alter the rattan and the fabric. For hard-to-reach areas of the openwork caning, a gentle air blower or a vacuum on the lowest setting with a brush attachment is effective. The steel structure can be wiped with a dry cloth.
